In 1923 he married Ora Lee Crabtree. They had four children Bobbye, Rommye, Mollye and Clyde. Dennis and Ora tried farming. He was a member of the Carpenters Union. They moved to Michigan the first time when Bob was a baby and returned home to KY. After Clyde was born they moved to Jackson, Jackson, MI where Dennis and Ora found jobs in the auto industry. They both were members of the United Auto Workers Union. Dennis was vice president of his local and was active in the labor movement.
Dennis was also active in Democratic politics. He had a great sense of humor and could usually find humor in any situation.
In 1969 Dennis and Ora decided to move back to Kentucky. Shortly after they found a home to purchase Dennis suffered a heart attack. He died in the intensive care unit at Western Baptist (now Baptist Health) Hospital in Paducah, McCracken County, KY. He is buried near his parents at Oscar Community Cemetery, Oscar, Ballard County, KY.
