Joseph Baker McLaughlin, son of Thomas M. and Bertha Baker McLaughlin, was born and raised on a rural Ross and Pike county farm. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1921. For

He sought higher education and graduated in 1926 with a BA in Agricultural studies from Ohio State University, Columbus .

On March 7, 1928 he married Nellie Jacobs Bair in Mount Vernon, Knox County, Ohio. They moved north where he was! employed at Henry County's Farm Experiment 0Station near Holgate. She was a librarian in the local school.

In 1935 he and co-worker, Clifford Muntz, founded Muntz-McLaughlin Co (hybrid seed corn development, sales and distribution) in Holgate.

In late 1940 or 1941, Joe & Nell adopted her 12 year old niece, Wilma and raised her into adulthood.

In the mid 1940's Joe moved on into chemical sales eventually owning his own company, JB Sales based in Deshler, Ohio.

He resided in Deshler the remainder of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Roy and grandson Randy Hayes.

J. B. was survived by his wife Nellie of 45 years, daughter Wilma (Dale) Hayes, 3 granddaughters, great grandchildren, sisters Miss Helen McLaughlin and Mary (Clifford) Muntz and several nieces and nephews.

A month or so after his memorial service in Deshler, Nellie scattered his ashes at the base of a tree on the McLaughlin family Farm where he was born and raised southwest of Bainbridge, Ross Co, OH.
