Tribute written by Phillip Plotz, M.D.

Kitty was a feral cat trying to survive in a Los Angeles hospital parking structure. She was rescued by hospital worker named Cheryl who had been watching her for some time and noticed that she was starving and pregnant.

Cheryl convinced me to adopt Kitty when I was a medical resident and wasn't exactly looking for extra company or responsibility. But Kitty actually end up adopting me. She broke through my tough exterior and became my best friend. She has been with me through difficult times and contributed to my accomplishments.

We moved several times across the country and Kitty was a great companion for the adventure.

It was her unconditional love and friendship that won me over. I don't know why I was lucky enough to have such a pal but I don't question it. We made a good team and I am just grateful for the time I did have.

2 1/2 years ago, she was diagnosed with kidney disease and I had to learn that each day is a gift and living in the moment is the best. She adapted well to treatment and taught me that we don't know what tomorrow holds, so just cherish the moments we have in the present. Recently she was diagnosed with cancer and I am grateful she did not suffer long.

After we pass on, I believe we rejoin our animal companions - who really are our family - and that gives me comfort. I thank God for my buddy Kitty. Sleep well, stay warm and cozy till we meet again.
