He moved to Muncie during World War I from Albany and was manager of the Ball Brothers paper mills in this city and at Noblesville until his retirement in 1945. He learned the paper mill business from his father, Richard Austin, who built and operated strawboard plants at Terre Haute and Vincennes.
In 1890, Mr. Austin was sent to Australia to set up a paper mill there and during this part of his life he traveled in the Hawaiian Islands, Samoa, New Zealand and Ceylon, and eventually returned to the United States by way of Europe.
He was a member of the Albany Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge there.
Surviving are his wife, Imogene; three sons, Herschel of Muncie, Murray of Chicago, and Max of Mishawaka; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian White of Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Emma Manor of Bluffton, and three grandchildren, Russell Dean, James and Michael Austin.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Meeks Mortuary at 3:30 p.m. Friday and entombment will be in Elm Ridge Mausoleum. Friends may call at the mortuary after 3 p.m. Thursday or anytime before services Friday.
