Herschel E. Austin, 83, a retired Muncie Contractor, died Tuesday in Ball Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Redkey and moved as a child to Muncie, where he graduated from Central High School. He spent most of his life in this area.


Mr. Austin also graduated from the University of Michigan and Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University). For more than 30 years, Mr. Austin owned and operated H.E. Austin Construction Co. in the Muncie area. He was a life member of the Half Century Club of Ball State University and a member of Eagles Lodge 231, Moose Lodge 33 and Elks Lodge 245, all of Muncie, and Knights of Pythias, Yorktown.


Surviving are his wife, Crystal Carter Austin; a son, James F. Austin (wife-Mary), Highland; a stepdaughter, Deanne Greer, Cocoa Beach, Fla.; a brother, Max Austin, Sun City, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Jeannine Klemm, Indianapolis; four stepgrandchildren, Dennis and Douglas Whitacre and Susan and Craig Spenser; gour great-grandchildren, Sara Nicole Klemm and Dillon, Cabry Anne and Benjamin Whitacre, and several nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Austin, and a brother, Murray Austin.


Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Meeks Motuary. Calling at the mortuary will be 4-7 p.m. today and before the service Friday. Entombment will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to any charity.
