A native of Lucca, Padre Paolino Bernardini, longtime Master of the Apostolic Palace and theologian of Pope Innocect XI, came from a prominent, noble family. Entering the Order of Preachers at the early age of fourteen, in 1662 he was named prior of S. Romano, of which he took care of the needed restorations. Named confessor to the Sacred College of Cardinals during the Conclave of 1671, which elected Clement X to the See of St. Peter, he served as confessor to his successor, Blessed Pope Innocent XI, and as his theologian, following his appointment as Master of the Apostolic Palace. Leaving the office due to his age in 1711, he died at the Dominican House of Studies of Santa Maria sopra Minerva at the venerable age of 94.
