Joseph Kolbe, 77, retired town of Charlestown farmer, and formerly a supervisor of that township, died Thursday morning at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, following a brief illness.

Mr. Kolbe had been taken to the hospital the past Tuesday after being taken suddenly ill at his farm home.

Born on the family homestead in the town of Charlestown in May 1875, Mr. Kolbe had spent his entire lifetime in the town. He married the former Martha Reiser in 1904.
One of the area's most active citizens, he was accorded statewide honors in 1941 for his work as one of Wisconsin's most progressive farmers. The tribute was paid Mr. Kolbe at the State Fair in Milwaukee on Aug. 23 of that year, with his son, Leo, making the public presentation.

In addition of the performance of his farm work, Mr. Kolbe served for 15 years as a Town of Charlestown supervisor.

Surviving are his wife; four sons, Hugo of Milwaukee, and Elmer, Leo and Clem of Chilton; two daughters, Mrs. Werner Geiser of Charlesburg and Mrs. Arno Weller of Chilton; 20 grandchildren; a brother, John Kolbe of Town of Charlestown, and three sisters, Mrs. Frank Keuler, Mrs. Nic. Muellenbach and Mrs. Joseph Muellenbach, all of Charlesburg.

A brother, Frank and a sister, Mrs. Frank Reiser preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at St. Martin Catholic church in the town of Charlestown with the Rev. Anulf Buck officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Kolbe, Joseph (May 16, 1875-Nov. 6, 1952 –husband of Martha Reiser [married June 14, 1904 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chilton] –son of Robert Kolbe [1840-1916] and his second wife Magdalena Woelfel [1845-1929] –born in Town of Charlestown –on March 10, 1904. Joseph purchased the 121.38-acre farm centered at N3869 in Section 17, Town of Charlestown –on April 7, 1922, Joseph purchase a 58.50-acre farm centered on the north side of Weeks Road in Hayton –soon after this purchase, the farmstead was razed with the land then becoming part of the Joseph Kolbe farm centered at N3869 Weeks Road in Section 17, Town of Charlestown –on Aug. 26, 1948, Joseph sold this now 141.38-acre farm to his son Clement Kolbe –on Aug. 6, 1945, Joseph purchased from School District Number 3 of the Town of Charlestown the one-acre lot with former public school on the north side of Highway 151 in Hayton –on March 13, 1946, Joseph sold this lot with former school to Riesterer and Schnell Inc. –soon after this sale, this former school house was moved to the Riesterer and Schnell farm implement business at 23411 Highway 151 in Section 18, Town of Eaton, Manitowoc County –died from "gangrene of sigmoid –volvulus with obstruction") –buried at St. Martin Catholic Cemetery, Town of Charlestown [marriage record Calumet 4-30] [death record Calumet 13-225]
