Again this week we are called upon to chronicle the death of one of Louisa County's old settlers and best citizens. One by one the passing of pioneers has been noted until the ranks of the men and women who have converted the wilderness into this garden spot of America have been so thinned out that but a few can be counted in any township.
Thomas Newell was born in Logan County, Ohio, May 26th, 1822, his ancestors being natives of Kentucky, and his father a soldier in the War of 1812. His parents being dead he came to Iowa in 1840, crossing the Mississippi river August 4th, and locating in the south part of this township where he continued to reside until his death, which occurred last Wednesday night, September 27, 1899.
In 1850 Mr. Newell was united in marriage to Miss Sarah J. Mock who with the ten children born to them, viz: Mrs. Elizabeth Hensleigh of Ladd, Va.; Mrs. Josephine Weiser, Fontanelle, Iowa; Samuel P. and Benj. of Denver; Mrs. Ida M. Johnston, Mrs. Vira Smith, Robert, William, Abe and Hugh of this county, survive him and were permitted to be present in his last sickness to minister to him.
Mr. Newell's last sickness began with the sudden death of his brother, Andrew, noted in THE TRIBUNE several weeks ago, which was a great shock and from which he never recovered. The funeral will take place from the Fairfiew church today at 2 o'clock and the interment will be made in the Fairview cemetery.
