Garret Joseph Zuppiger - Granite Mountain Hotshot, 27, passed from this life on June 30, 2013 with his crew in Yarnell, Arizona.
Garret was born December 14, 1985 in Phoenix, Arizona to Suzanne (Fisher) Wagner and Bryan Zuppiger.
Garret loved the outdoors and all the adventures it could bring, backpacking, fishing and rock climbing. Along with music, his guitar, cooking and reading Garret enjoyed and loved life to the fullest.
Garret is survived by his girlfriend Emily Ashby; his parents Suzanne Wagner (David), and Bryan (Kim) Zuppiger; grandparents Judith and Bruce Lindquist; Marcie and Len Theokas and Frank Zuppiger and many friends throughout the world.
Services celebrating Garrets life were presented by his fellow Firefighters from throughout the world on Friday, June 12, 3013 at 10:00am at Goldwater Lake. Some of his ashes will be interred with his brothers at the Pioneer Cemetery in the Granite Mountain Hotshot section with full honors.
Donations in remembrance of the Granite Mountain Hotshots can be directed to the 100 Club, information on donations at 100club.org. Garret graduated from Greenway High School in Phoenix in 2003. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree from Eller College of Management in 2008. During his freshman year of high school he was nominated for the People to People Student Ambassador program and travelled to England, Ireland and Wales representing and promoting our country. Garret chose to attend the Wildfire Training Academy, was first in his class and recipient of honorary boots.
As a boy, Garret was one of the youngest at that time to receive certification and sail Long Beach harbor in a sabot (sailing dinghy). He was extremely proud and excited to be accepted as a member of the Granite Mountain Hotshots for the 2012 season, having no prior experience or background in firefighting.
During his rookie season as a Hotshot, he attended wildfire training school and was awarded the fire boots for being first in his class. During the off months of fire season he was a carpenter by trade, which he loved as well.
Garret most valued his family, friends and the outdoors. He loved to run, hike, fish, rock-climb, travel, cook and play his guitar for his friends and family. Garret was the most generous, giving, kind and hard working person, using his everlasting abundance of energy towards always helping others, regardless of his help having been requested or not. He was an avid reader and a beautiful writer. He loved vocabulary and would try to stump his "Ome" by choosing a word he thought may accomplish that.
Garret had a sense of humor like no other. He was a free spirit and loved a great adventure. He lived his life by his favorite saying: "Dream as if you will live forever, live as if you will die tomorrow".

He was a proud member of the Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew. The crew was fighting the Yarnell Hill fire, which broke out Friday northwest of Phoenix.
The firefighters lost were from a hotshot crew working out of Prescott, a town where fighting forest fires is for some residents a tradition, something passed down from generation to generation.
Those who knew Zuppiger, a May 2008 Eller College of Management graduate who lived in Prescott, Ariz., describe him as generous, humble and deeply invested in his work as a firefighter.
