Ethel, "Essie" Noll Koch, 92, lifelong resident of Centre County, died Monday, January 3, 2005 at The Fairways at Brookline Village, State College. Mrs. Koch was born July 16, 1912, to William Henry Noll, Jr., and Cora Belle Twitmyer Noll of Pleasant Gap. Her father founded Whiterock Quarries and in 1882, established the Fairlawn General Store in Pleasant Gap. She was the youngest and last surviving child of the family of 10 children. Mrs. Koch graduated from Bellefonte High School in 1928, attended Lock Haven State College, and graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1939. She taught elementary school in Pleasant Gap for 7 years. On August 2, 1937, she married Hubert Campbell Koch, who until 1973 operated the Koch Funeral Home, which was founded in 1913 by his father, Harry N. Koch. They lived in the Koch family home on the corner of College Avenue and Burrowes Street in State College until 1955, when they moved to Nimitz Avenue. Following the death of her husband on December 24, 1974, Mrs. Koch continued to reside on Nimitz Avenue until 1997. Mrs. Koch was a 50-year member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, State College, and a Charter Member of its Women's Society. She was an honorary life member of the American Association of University Women, a 50-year member of the State College Women's Club, a life member of the Pennsylvania State University Alumni Association, and a member of Centre Hills Country Club and Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Koch Schefter and her husband, John, of Great Falls, VA, and two grandchildren: Dr. Jessica Koch Devin and her husband, Dr. Clinton Devin, of Nashville, TN, and Tyler Koch Schefter of Great Falls, VA.
