Forest Co.,. Pa., d. 1912, Keffer Hill', Forest Co., Pa. both -bur, 'in Whig Hill Cem. They were Methodists. When "Billy" was six years old and his father (name unknown) worked in the fields of his Lancaster, Pa. farm;
he was usually sent to the field with a bucket of water for his father. In the summer of 1838 his mother sent him with water, as usual, and after his father had a drink the boy stood watching from the edge of the field as his father, who was driving a yoke of oxen on a plow, worked his way to the opposite end of the long field. As he stood there, suddenly a large indian sprang from the brush and clapped his hand over Billy's mouth to keep him from crying out. He was kidnapped and taken to the Indian village and did not see his own family for six years.-
he was watched carefully, and tied up at nights until the indians thought there was no danger of his trying to escape. Finally they started to take him out on hunting trips and taught him the use of a bow and arrow.
He became very proficient at it. At last, after six years, they thought it safe to let him have the freedom of the camp & village and he watched for a chance to escape.
In the early summer a hunting trip was planned and he was to go along. During the hunt the trip took them into an area that he recognized as near his old home. He waited for a chance to escape and soon it came when the hunters were occupied. - He threw down his bow and arrows and ran for his life in the direction he knew his father and mother lived. It was a sight long to be remembered when he ran into the old Home almost out of breath. The family knew him instantly but could hardly believe their eyes. He was kept hidden for a long time in fear that the Indians would come and kill him.
When he was 16 years old he left Lancaster and went to Whig Hill, Forest Co., Pa. where he and Catherine were married, and where they lived their whole lives toqether. They had 12 ch.
