She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas Gierla. Surviving are her husband, Francis Chmiel; four daughters, Eleanor Schaff and Deborah Chmiel, both of East Brunswick, Karen McKinney of Platsburgh, N.Y., and Janice Pfuhl of Long Island, N.Y.; her brother, Walter Gierla of Mountainside; and her six grandchildren, Morgan, Mark, Joanna, Benjamin, Nichole and William.
