George Kern was the son of Peter and Katherine Ziegler. Both parents died a few months apart in 1920. George was not legally adopted, but as an adult, changed name to Kern in honor of the family that raised him, Kasper and Elizabeth (Simon) Kern.

Attended rural schools in the Concord Township. Continued farming until 1976 when they retired and moved into Garner. He worked at the ASCS part-time in Garner up to the present time. He was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church and VFW in Garner.
Survivors are his wife Rita, children; Mary Kay Januisik in Custer Park IL, Patricia Kern in Chicago IL, Robert G.
