"Although Stakem has long been the most prolific name in Midland there are probably more descendants of five Cavanaugh sisters than any other single family group. A sixth sister settled in Frostburg and a brother James Cavanaugh also came to Midland from his native Ireland in the Eighteen Seventies. One of the Cavanaugh sisters, Catherine, married Hugh McVeigh. Father McVeigh was their son. Another, Margaret Cavanaugh, married Simon Kenny and Father Patrick J. Kenny was their son. Mary Ann Cavanaugh married Patrick O'Rourke; Julia Cavanaugh married Dennis Dorsey and Esther Cavanaugh married Garrett Burns, all living in Midland. Sarah Cavanaugh married Samuel Jackson, Frostburg. Their descendants number well over a hundred."

Gravesite Details

According to St. Michael's parish records, John Cavanaugh and his wife Mary Esther Cullen are buried in the parish cemetery. Having walked that cemetery several times, I cannot find any grave markers. There is a large 'Cavanaugh' plot, however.
