In April 1856 at Worcester, Massachusetts, he married Susan M. Smith, daughter of Herbert and Matilda Smith. There were no children in the marriage. After his death, she received a widow's pension. Susan (Smith) Bailey died 9 Dec 1895 in Worcester, MA, and the death was reported in the "Worcester Daily Spy."

Almon was killed in action at Spottsylvania Court House, while serving in Co. C, 36th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, under the name of 'A. Fernando Bailey'.
