It is documented that Andrew Briant, at the time of the burning of Springfield, N.J. during the Revolutionary war battle at that place on June 23, 1780, hastily gathered his family and a few possessions together, and headed for what became Center Grove, Randolph Township, N.J. Andrew endeavored to persuade his father Johannes Briant (1704-1787) and his mother Mary Miller Briant to flee with them, but the parents refused to leave their home and possessions, yet they and their house was spared by the enemy. It is possible that the Cannonball House remaining in Springfield, NJ is that former Briant home. Johannes and Mary did eventually leave to live in Randolph with Andrew and the many other Briants who made western Morris county their home.

Andrew and Rachel had thirteen children:
(unknown daughter) Briant, wife of James Young
John
Mary Briant Phillps
Sarah Briant, who married a Moses Crane
Benjamin
Joseph (died young)
Rachel (died young)
Phebe Briant Fairchild
Lewis
James
Elizabeth Briant Dixon
Hannah S. Briant Reeve
Joseph

Beneath this mound a father lies.
Who once possesse'd parental ties.
Those ties are now dissolved you see.
The immortal spirit is set free.
