She was the daughter of William Franklin Anderson and Sophronia Alice Himelrick. William and Sophronia had 14 children including two sets of twins. Mary had an Identical twin, Anna Virginia.

On Sep 3, 1927 she married Ephriam Henry Boord in Fairmont, West Virginia. They had two children, Paul Henry and Robert William. Paul Henry died of Leukemia at the age of 22. Mary and Ephriam were divorced about 1941.
