Wilder Austin Pickard was the son of Canadian born parents, William Pickard and Emma (nee Yerxa) Pickard. About 1855, his parents and two older sisters moved from New Brunswick, Canada to Sun Prairie, in Dane County, Wisconsin, where Wilder Austin Pickard was born in 1857. His parents, one sister, and infant niece, are all buried in the Sun Prairie Cemetery.

Wilder Austin Pickard originally established the Pickard China Company in 1893 in Edgerton, Wisconsin. In the early 1900's, Wilder A. Pickard moved the company to Chicago, Illinois. Pickard China, makers of fine chinaware, including commissioned pieces for the White House in Washington D.C., is still in existence, located in Antioch, Illinois.
