At an early age she moved with her family to the Santurce sector of San Juan, specifically to the area known as "Trastalleres." There she met the man she would eventually marry, Luis Antonio Ruiz Baez. While engaged to Luis, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Korea, where he was wounded in 1951. They married in 1953 and had three children: Luis Ramón (1954), José Antonio (1956), and Nancy (1958).
The family moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1957 and lived there till 1969 when they moved back to Puerto Rico.
