Doris (Geddes) Newman, 1899-1957
Grace (Hendy, Buckels*) Drew, 1901-
Anna (Hendy, Volkens**) Doran, 1906-

STORY:
In 1899, Iona Hendy's first husband, John Curtis Geddes, died and is buried in Amity Cemetery in Iroquois Co., IL. In 1900, Iona and daughters, Myrtle and Doris, moved from IL to Alberta, Canada. Iona's second husband. Charles Hendy, was born in England, and I do not know how they met or when or where they were married. In February 1907, Iona died approximately six months after the birth of her daughter, Anna. Myrtle (Geddes) Royer told us of Iona's long and serious illness, during that time. After Iona's death, all the children were placed in a Catholic facility, possibly an orphanage. Myrtle recounted the kindness of the nuns and the impact they had on the rest of her life. By 1910, Myrtle and Doris had returned to Iroquois Co., IL where they lived with relatives. Their return to Illinois from Canada was by train and by themselves. They arrived in Illinois to find no one waiting at the station for them. Doris was crying, but Myrtle told her to hold her head up, and they walked down the street, until someone finally came for them. After 1911, Charles Hendy, along with Grace, leaves Canada and eventually settles in Florida. Sometime between 1907 and 1916, Edward and Eda Volkens adopt Anna and immigrate to the U.S. in 1916 through Eastport, Idaho. They eventually settle in Long Beach, CA.

SOURCES:
This information was obtained from documents available on the internet, Myrtle (Geddes) Royer's funeral visitation book and Myrtle's verbal accounts. Relatives can be found on Find-A-Grave at Amity Cemetery and Maple Grove Cemetery, both in Iroquois Co., IL Of special interest are the Laird and Albin families who have their own websites. I do not know why Iona's headstone gives her husband's name as J.P. Hendy. My grandmother had someone in Canada tend the grave and keep flowers on it, until her death in 1955.
