A Decatur man who celebrated his 100th birthday last Sept 18, died at 10 am Monday in St. Marys hospital.
He was Albert C. Bassler, 2147 E. Cleveland Ave. who farmed in the Moweaqua area until retiring 31 years ago.He moved to Decatur in 1951.
In 1963 Mr.Bassler received a $2,000 life insurance policy payment from Charles S. Huffman of Blue Mound from whom he had bought the policy in 1917. Payment was made when at age 96 he had outlived the life expectancy table on which the policy was based.
Mr. Bassler was born near Forsyth on Sept. 18, 1867, the son of John and Emma Cox Bassler. On Dec. 28, 1893 he was married near Forsyth to Mahala Stroh, who died Nov. 16, 1966.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs.Russell(Pauline) Grooms, Decatur and Mrs. Esther Harwell, Los Angeles, Calif, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. A daughter, three brothers, three sisters and one great grandchild preceded him in death.
Mr. Bassler was an active member of the Fame Evangelical United Brethren church near Moweaqua, serving it as trustee and Sunday school superintendent and teacher for many years.
Funeral service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday in the Fame church with burial in the IOOF cemetery at Moweaqua. Friends may call after 6 pm today at the Dawson & Wikoff funeral home and from 1 pm until service time in the church.
