Albert Harmel was born March 9, 1918 in Terry to Albert O and Marie Graff Harmel and was raised on the "home place" northeast of Terry. Following graduation from Terry High School in 1937, he worked on the Fallon-Glendive portion of the Buffalo Rapids project and on the Fort Peck Dam as it neared completion. Physically disqualified for WWII duty by Selective Service, he tried unsuccessfully to enlist in the Navy. During the early 40's, he worked in Rochester MN, returned to a job at Terry Drug Store and spent time working in CA. He started working in the US Post Office May 1, 1945 and retired April 23, 1980, serving the Terry customers with great pride and handy stories.
He and Dorothy Rogerson were married in Terry in September, 1944. They were married 51 years when she died in March, 1996. He married Winnie Foot Bremer in February 1998 in Baker and they resided in Terry until his death.
He enjoyed gardening, telling a good story, square and regular dancing.
Mr Harmel, 87, died December 9, 2005. Survivors include his wife; a son, Craig (Phoebe Reed) Harmel, Astoria OR; three daughters; Darlene (Gary) Vihinen, Bellevue WA, Jackie Bremer, Miles City and Patricia Bremer of Fort Worth TX; seven grandchildren; a great grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
