Carl was a junior executive of an international mining company in Amsterdam (1937-1940).
In September 1942, just six weeks after their wedding, Hanna BLOCH and Carl BENJAMIN were taken to Camp Westerbork, a detainment camp. They stayed there until 2 December 1942 when they were suddenly released.
On 16 June 1943, all Jews in the Jewish section of Amsterdam were rounded up and brought to Camp Westerbork again, including Hanna, Carl, his parents and his sister, Irene. Dr. Max Benjamin, Carl's father, worked as a doctor in the camp. Mrs. Irma Benjamin, Carl's mother, and Irene worked as nurses. Carl worked in the scrap-iron yard. Hanna registered new arrivals.
Eventually Carl was taken to Auschwitz Concentration/Extermination Camp from where he never left.
Carl's mother, Irma, was taken to Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp, where she died in 1945. Her husband and daughter survived the war.
