Mrs. IRMA BENJAMIN

Beloved wife of Doctor Max Benjamin.

Dear mother of Irene Benjamin and the late Carl Benjamin and mother-in-law of Johanna Adele "Hanna" Bloch.

In September 1942, just six weeks after their wedding, Hanna BLOCH and Carl BENJAMIN were taken to Camp Westerbork, a detainment camp. They stayed there until 2 December 1942 when they were suddenly released.

On 16 June 1943, all Jews in the Jewish section of Amsterdam were rounded up and brought to Camp Westerbork again, including the Benjamins: Dr. Max Benjamin, wife Irma Benjamin, son Carl, daughter Irene Benjamin, and daughter-in-law Hanna, wife of Carl. Dr. Benjamin worked as a doctor in the camp. Mrs. Benjamin and Irene worked as nurses. Carl worked in the scrap-iron yard. Hanna registered new arrivals.

Mrs. Irma Benjmin died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp but probably not by execution/extermination. Her husband, daughter, and daughter-in-law survived and returned to Amsterdam. Hanna eventually emigrated to the United States of America.
