Bob was born on October 4, 1934, a son of Robert and Violet (Johnston) Abernethy in Beach. Bob was raised in the Beach area and educated in the Beach Public School System graduating with the class of 1952. Bob met and was later married to Sally Quast on July 13, 1958 in Wolf Point, Montana and to this union three children were born; Jody, Jeff and Jim.
Bob's life was centered around the rodeo circuit. He was known for his bareback and saddle bronc riding. He was sitting second in the world in riding barebacks prior to breaking his neck which required him to hang up his spurs early. His passion for rodeo did not end as he became a stock contractor in the following years. The highlight of his rodeo career was being inducted into the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora, North Dakota along with his rodeo stock; Double Jeopardy and Old Shep. Top Hand will also be inducted into the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame later this year.
Bob was very proud of all of his children and their accomplishments. He loved playing cards with his buddies, watching sports on TV and loved having control over his remote control. Bob was also on the television program "To Tell The Truth". He spent many hours in the country working on projects and looking over the land.
Bob will be missed by all his family, friends and especially his grandchildren.
