Charles Smith was a leader in the development of the paper machine industry in America. He was long at the head of the plant organized in 1828 in South Windham, engaged in the manufacture of paper machinery, which, aside from the home field, found its way into many foreign fields. The Smith and Winchester Manufacturing Company is now (1916) operated successfully by his son, Guilford Smith.
