Died, at the residence of his father, 3 miles south of Lexington, March 24 1897, Mr. James Walter Cooke.

James Walter Cooke, son of A.V. Cooke, was born and raised in Lafayette county and was called to his account, March 24, 1897, at the age of 19 years, 8 months and 15 days. Death at all times is unexpected and brings deepest sorrow and grief to the hearts of loved ones, but it is doubly so when the relentless messenger calls for one who is but fairly starting upon the journey of life, with all its bright prospects and hopes before him. What might have been a brilliant and honorable career is cut short by laws inscrutable and the bereaved family is left to mourn the loss of a devoted son and loving brother. Walter was scarcely more than a boy. He had a good common school education and spent his life between his school duties and work upon his father's farm. In the family circle he was a dutiful son accepted the duties of his surroundings as was becoming one of his age, hearing his share of the farm duties as being only what was due from him. He was an affectionate and loving brother and many a silent tear will fall as the loved ones at home gaze upon the vacant chair and realize that Walter can be with them no more in this life.

Walter made a profession of religion before he died, and through the dark clouds of sorrow that now hover over the bereaved family they can see the sunshine of hope for the future. In another and better sphere they may hope to see again the dear departed one. While now they realize only their sad loss let them remember the wisdom and love of Him who doeth all things well and in their affliction put their trust in him. Though the mortal body has been consigned to mother earth, the spirit still lives and has but entered upon a higher and nobler life.
