Margaret was born June 9, 1924, in Skerry, N.Y. to Melvin and Thusa (Esseltine) Thomas, and was educated locally through the rural school. On August 14, 1944 she was united in marriage with Harold Russell at St. Mary's Church, Brushton, with the Msgr. J. Albert O'Brien presiding. Harold predeceased her July 7, 1989. For 28 years, Margaret worked in the cafeteria at the Brushton Moira School, retiring at the age of 70. Children of all ages, especially her grandchildren, brought her joy beyond life's measure. Margaret was a talented baker; she had the knack for making exceptional donuts, along with making a wedding day unforgettable with her beautiful wedding cakes.
Memories will be forever in the hearts of her children, Keith (Sharon) Russell of Ellenburg Center, Joyce (Raymond) Miller of Wingdale, N.Y., Lee (Peggy) Russell of Winthrop, and Tami Sauve of North Carolina. Also surviving is a sister Irene Collette of Malone, two sisters-in-law Vyola Thomas of Rochester, and Emmeline Thomas of Scary, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, a son Larry, who entered God's choir of angels, brothers Howard, Erwin and Clifton, and her sisters, Mayfred Prue and Orpha Barton, predeceased her.
Memorial contributions in Margaret's honor may be made to the St. Mary's Cemetery Association, 1347 State Route 11, Brushton, NY 12916.
A graveside service in Margaret's honor will be Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at 10 a.m., in St. Mary Cemetery, Brushton.
