Notes from his bio: "From Maryland to Stateburg, S. C. in 1810 (his home was Hill Crest which is now known as The Borough House) & among earliest doctors in Sumter Co., S. C.. Joel Poinsett died while visiting his home in 1851. Borough house became his home after marriage, the Thomas Hooper family having lived there during colonial days & the Rev. War. Though loyal to the CSA, he was too old to be in the CSA military."
