"She was a ward ["ward" = adopted daughter] of Judge Thomas & Mary Hooper who bought the Adam Brisbane Tavern (19 by 33 feet) in 1792, having moved from St. Andrews Parish, his father being Rev. William Hooper, rector of Christ Church in Boston; the tavern related to the ferry across the Wateree that Brisbane operated & was in Stateborough on the great road from Camden to Charleston; and the tavern became the center of what would become The Borough House. "
