This is the story of my Great Great Grandfather, and although tracing his life story was not easy, I am going to attempt to be as factual as I can. Most dates have been calculated by using censuses and other official documents. Some dates used were taken from the Chautauqua Genealogical Society.

Abraham 'Abram' Crowell Jr was born in 1826 in Hamilton, New York. His father Abraham born in Saratoga, was 37 and his mother, Betsey (Wheeler) born in Waitsfield, Vermont, was 27. Abram was one of ten children and the fifth oldest, landing right in the middle. It appears Abram spent all of his years growing up in Hamilton, Madison County, NY.

We find him on the first 'by name' census in 1850 living in Villenova, NY with his parents and siblings; Phoebe and I. (?). He is 24 years old and his occupation is "laborer". His father was a farmer. Approximately 75% of the census sheet is filled with other Crowells and all are living on farms.

Two years later Abram's father passes away and we learn that on the 1855 census he is now the head of household and is earning a living as a farmer. He is supporting his mother, and sisters Phoebe and Samantha.

In 1860 he is still in Villenova, unwed, and farming his land. His mother and sister Phoebe are residing with him. Looking at the values of the farm estates on the census sheet, it seems his land is worth double if not triple what the other family farms have been appraised at. Perhaps he was a wealthy farm owner?

In June of 1863 there are Civil War Draft Registration records that show Abraham is 37 years of age, and an unwed farmer living in Chautauqua County. Again, almost the entire page is filled with Crowells.

In 1870, not much has changed. Abram is still a farming bachelor in Villenova. He is also still supporting his mother as well as his 33 year old sister Phoebe.

1875 census- no new information to report, everything is exactly the same as before.

In 1880 it was just single Abram and his mother Betsey. Phoebe has gotten married.

It's now 1885 and Abram is 59 years young, and finally...this is the year I believe he wed my Great Great Grandmother Eldora 'Dora' Stearns. The two lived in the farmhouse alone as Betsey had passed away in 1881. Five years after marriage, on 17 Mar 1890 the two welcomed a baby boy, Daniel Leroy Crowell.
(Keep in mind, Abram was 64 when he became a father for the first time!) Abram and Dora spent 10 years married and half of that together as parents, I like to imagine that those years were happy ones for them all.

Abraham Crowell Jr passed away in 1895 at the age of 69. Found in NY death index, died in Villenova, NY.

He is laid to rest in Forestville, New York at Ball Hill Cemetery.
