Christian G. Speis (the preferred spelling for this branch of the Spies/ Spiess family) was born in Elsoff, Westfalen, Preussen on the 4 March 1830, the 5th child and 3rd son of Johann Christian Spies and his wife, Christina Womelsdorf Spies. Christian was baptized on 14 March 1830 in the Evangelist-Reformed Church of Elsoff. At age 17, he arrived in the United States on 26 August 1847 aboard the "Christopher Columbus" from Bremen. He arrived with his parents, and his siblings: Christina, age 23; Jacob, age 20; Hans C. age 17, Catharine, age 15; Louisa, age 9; Maria Louisa, age 6 and Margarethe Elizabeth, age 3; also on the same ship were his brother-in-law, Christian Kramer, age 30; his sister, Catharina Spies Kramer, age 25; their daughters, Anna Catharina, age 3 and Christina, age 1. After arrival, the family made their way to Rochester, New York where they settled in. On 16 September 1858, Christian married Catherine E. (Kate) Mitchell who was born in Rochester. Together they had three daughters, Nellie, Grace and Alice. Christian served in the Civil War: SPEIS, Christian, 140th Infantry enlisted September 1862; Captain, Company B, 140th New York Infantry; he was severely wounded at Little Round Top, at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; promoted; discharged 1863.
He was employed in Rochester as a carpenter, cabinet maker and even as a mosaic tile man. Christian died on 21 September 1901 and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery on 23 September 1901. He died of heart disease at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 17 days.
