John was born in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland not far from Belfast to Andrew and Elizabeth Mcclelland. The family ran Linen mills in the area. John was one of 14 children. He came out to Australia in 1864 with his wife Elizabeth Stewart and four remaining children and settled at Jimbour Station near Dalby on the Darling Downs in Queensland. He was able to select some land to breed black coach horses.He is buried in the historical Jimbour cemetery via Dalby Queensland.
