Born to a family of Moravian converts in Sichem-in-the-Oblong, Dutchess Co., NY, his family moved when he was a child to Norhtampton Co., PA, possibly to the Moravian settlement there. He served in the American Army in Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War. He married (1) Phoebe Davis in 1786; (2) Elizabeth Warner in 1791; (3) Martha Anstrew (1832). He is mentioned as being a "settler" in the Moravian Church Book for Gnaddenhutten, Tuscarawas Co., OH in July of 1799, and appears to have remained there until removing to Wayne County around 1822. He had 15 children and died at the age of 94.
