Son of Johann Benedict Heisinger (1778-1834) and Johanna Sophia (Weber) Heisinger (1784-1861). Baptized 20 May 1810 at Nicholaikirche, Leipzig, Germany.

Julius married Christiana Friedericka Muller, 12 January 1841, Leipzig, Saxony, Germany.
Son of a prosperous merchant, he studied art at the Leipzig Academy (1825-1830) and in Rome (1830-1834). Julius' baptismal record reveals that he was assigned a draft number and the date 25 March 1830 for muster into service. This explains his move to Rome. Two years later, younger brother Bernard moved to Vienna because of the military draft.

After a several year tour of the Continent studying his craft in the major cities, he established himself as a portraitist in Dresden in the late 1830s.

Family fled to America from Dresden during the Revolution of 1848, arriving in Baltimore, Maryland aboard the SS STEPHEN LURMAN, 7 September 1849, then on to Washington County, Wisconsin. Eventually settled on the shore of Lake Winnebago south of Oshkosh in Black Wolf in 1853, where he maintained a studio until 1877. Julius returned to Europe in 1860, 1862, and 1865. Julius and Christiana are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh. Surviving work is mostly in private collections in Europe and the United States with three paintings in the Oshkosh Public Museum and a self-portrait in the Leipzig Historical Museum.
