Helmuth Miller was born on June 21, 1834 in Prussia to Johann and Christina Mueller. It is thought that his given name may have originally been "Herman", and that he Americanized his surname from Mueller to Miller. The exact date of his immigration may never be known for sure, but it likely occurred between 1852-1855.
Helmuth was a shoemaker by trade. He married on May 10, 1856, at the age of 21, to another recent German immigrant named Dorathea Harning. They made their home just to the west of the city of the Detroit, in Springwells Township (this area is now part of Detroit).
According to their death certificates, Dorathea and Helmuth had a total of 14 children, of which only 7 survived into adulthood. At this time, the details about only 9 of these children are known:
1857 - Herman
1859 - Bernhardt, aka Ben
1861 - Henry
1865 - Emilia
1867 - Hugo
1869 - Louis
1871 - Dora (died 1871)
1874 - Augusta
1876 - baby girl (stillborn)
Helmuth died at the age of 65 on July 4, 1899 in Springwells Township. His wife Dorathea passed away almost a year later on May 17, 1900, also in Springwells Township. Like her husband, she was also 65 years of age.
Helmuth and Dorathea are buried in Woodmere Cemetery, in Section A, lot 379 SW-1/4. On this lot are also buried their daughter-in-law Wilhelmine (1st wife of Bernhardt), and 9 of their grandchildren who died in infancy/childhood. There is only one large monument on this plot; there are no individual headstones.
