Silas Nayfield Dies Suddenly At Home Here
Prominent Banker Expires Result of Coronary Thrombosis
[picture]
Silas Nayfield, 61, Executive Vice President of the Liberty State Bank and Trust Company of Mount Carmel, died suddenly at 1:50 o'clock yesterday (Sunday) morning, at his residence, 334 south Oak street. Coronary thrombosis was the cause.
Mr. Nayfield had never been ill a day in his life, and on Saturday he attended to his banking business as usual, and in apparently good health. Late in the evening he made mention of pain about the heart. The symptoms did not appear to be alarming, and he retired. The end came without warning.
The funeral will be Wednesday morning. Following requiem mass at 9:00 o'clock in Our Mother of Consolation church, burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Silas Nayfield was an outstanding figure in banking and finance. Coming to Mount Caramel twenty-seven years ago as the first cashier of the Liberty State Bank, he soon became recognized as a banking authority, particularly in the field of financial investments.
He was an executive of unusual ability, served on important committees of the State Banking Association, and was a member of the American Bankers Association. Locally, in addition to his duties with the Liberty State, he served as secretary of the Sobieski Building and Loan Association.
Born September 12, 1886, at Nanticoke, Silas Nayfield graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1905. Soon after graduation he became a clerk and then an officer of the First National Bank of Nanticoke, and was attending the Wharton School of Finance when called to Mount Carmel in 1920, to become cashier of the newly organized Liberty State Bank.
In 1933 Mr. Nayfield became chairman of Mount Carmel Chapter, American Red Cross, a post he held three years, and for a time he was president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Our Mother of Consolation church, of Mount Carmel. Lodge 356, B.P.O. Elks, and of the Sons of Poland.
Mr. Nayfield was married, on October 9, 1910, to Mary (Zaborowska) Wilkes, who survives. There are three children; Dr. Ronald C. Nayfield, of Trenton, New Jersey; Dr. Chester L. Nayfield, of Des Moines, Iowa; and Geraldine, wife of Dr. Howard Waitz, of Detroit, Michigan. There are two grand-children, Jon and Barbara Waitz, of Detroit.
Also surviving are Mr. Nayfield's mother, Mrs. Josefa Baurys, of Nanticoke; and one brother, Dr. William Baurys, chief of the Sayre Hospital Urological Clinic, Athens, Pa.
