Marion, the name he preferred, was born in Union Township, near the town of Mason in Effingham County, IL. He was the second child of Catherine Barder and James Francis.
He married Mabel Sparling on 16 Jan 1922 and they had three children: Alice, Russell and Gladys. Not long after birth of the last child, the family moved to Chicago. Mabel contracted tuberculosis and was admitted to a sanitarium where she subsequently died. Marion placed the children in Hephzibah Children's Home at Oak Park in Cook County, where they remained until after he had remarried.
On 18 Apr 1931, he married Marianne Gorski. They had a stillborn child within the first year, and no additional children resulted in the marriage.
