Elizabeth "Betty" Akens, 81, of Moosic, died Tuesday at Mercy Special Skilled Unit in Nanticoke. She was married to the late Thomas Akens.
Born in Moosic on Jan. 25, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Samuel H. and Mary C. Coyne Hewitt. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a telephone operator in Moosic, and then was a homemaker and lived in Geneva, N.Y., most of her married life.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Avoca, and its Altar and Rosary Society, and Moosic Senior Citizens. She was president of the dietary group TOPS.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Hoffa, Margaret Loftus and Beatrice Hewitt, and four brothers, Donald, Edward, Samuel and John.
The funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home Inc., 728 Main St., Avoca, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Mary's Church, Avoca, officiated by the Rev. Joseph Elston. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
