Aart Van Essen, son of Nickolas and Anna Van Essen was born on a farm near Otley, May 18, 1894. Departed this life at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa march 25, 1949, aged 54 years, 10 months and 7 days. He was a World War I veteran having served his country from September 1917 until June 1919.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, he was united in marriage to Hazel Marie Nolin. To this union one son, Doyle was born, who with the widow survives. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant sister and two infant brothers. Six brothers and three sisters survive namely: Mrs. Artie Hiemstra, Robert and Otto of Otley, Frank of Oskaloosa, Mrs. Marie Kamerick, Henry and Miss Emma Van Essen of Pella, Martin of Prairie City and John of Chicago.
Most of his life was spent farming southeast of Prairie City, Iowa. He loved his tasks and performed them faithfully and well. He was a member of the Prairie City Reformed Church.
Hi long illness caused him much suffering, but Aart's brave spirit under an illness that was climaxed by thirteen weeks in the Veteran's Hospital endeared him to all who knew him in his affliction. His going home is a triumphal entry into the joy of the Lord.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 28, 1949 at 1:30 p.m. form the First Reformed Church of Prairie City, Iowa with Rev. Wm. Rosenberg officiating assisted by the Rev. Edward Huibregtse. Interment was in the Monroe Cemetery.
