WILLIAM WELCH DIED LAST NIGHT.
William S Welch, a well known and highly respected citizen of this town, passed away at his home, 538 Westfield Avenue, last night after illness dating since April of last year. Mr. Welch had been failing from that time on until August when he was compelled to take to his bed where he had been confined until his death.
Mr. Welch was born in Oak Ridge, Va., April 22, 1853. At the close of the Civil War his father, Charles G. Welch, moved to Lynchburg, Va., and from there in 1868 he came to this town and established the paint business that is now known as Welch Brothers. Incorporated. Mr. Welch spent two years in the local schools, first in the old brick school, opposite the Presbyterian church and then in the Prospect street school. In 1870 Mr. Welch's father's health was poor and at the age of seventeen Mr. Welch assumed the management of the business and has since conducted it.
Mr. Welch had always been a student of his business and sought to produce the best and most durable results and to remedy the weak point in his line. He had produced a number of valuable improvements and formulas which paint manufacturers are using.
In 1871 Mr. Welch became a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church and was for more than thirty years an official and active member of that church. He was for several years the Superintendent of the Sunday school and taught a Bible class during the week. He was also a local licensed Methodist minister and for a number of years has charge of the services at the chapel at Mountainside. He was one of the charter members of Fireside Council, Royal Areanum, was one of the Organizers of the Westfield Building and Loan Association, and had been a director in the association since its organization. He was a member of the Board of Education and had served the town on many important committees, was one of the promoters of the sewer system and aided in the securing sufficient names to a petition which made the sewerage of the town possible. He had always been a firm believer in the town and its possibilities and for many years had invested in local real estate3. At the time of his death he was president of the Westfield Land and Improvement Company and a member of the firm of William S. Welch & Son, real estate. He was for about ten years associated with the late Herbert L. Abrams in the real estate business.
Mr. Welch leaves his widow and seven children, five daughters, Mrs. William J Taylor, Mrs. B.F. Vervoort, Mrs. James D. Mumford, Mrs. Edward Parker, all of this town; Mrs J. Miller Welch, of Hackettstown, and two sons, Herbert R. Welch and Harold Welch both of this town. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren
The funeral will be held from the First Methodist church tomorrow afternoon at 3:30. Rev. Dr. S.J. Herben will be in charge, The sermon will be delivered by Rev. Wesley Martin. Other ministers who will be present and speak will be Rev. Charles S. Ryman, of Bloomfield, who married Mr. and Mrs. Welch; Rev. Dr. C.M. Anderson of Plainfield; Rev. Dr. W.H. Ruth of Paterson, and Rev. Dr. A.W. Hayes, of Port Jervis, N.Y. All of these ministers were former pastors of Mr. Welch.
