A Leutnant der Reserve, 9 Kompagnie, 3. Unterelsässisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr.138 he was wounded on 15 October 1917 at Lewwal [now Levala, Saarema, Estonia] and died the next day in a Lazarett. Originally buried in a cemetery at Peude [now Pöide, Saaremaa, Estonia], his body was moved in 1940 to the Friedhof der Garnison Königsberg in Preußen [now Kaliningrad, Russia], but this, along with most of the city was destroyed during WW2.
