Her husband John Middleton served as Sexton of this cemetery, the Drypool and Southcoates Cemetery on Hedon Road. After his death his wife Mary served as Sextoness.

According to Mrs. Laura Henry (nee Woodward) (1889-1990) we had a Woodward ancestor who was a soldier in the British army and he served in what is now Canada. After his time in the army ended he was "given a grant of land" in Canada. Mrs Laura Henry said that this Woodward ancestor tried farming in Canada for a few years, but it did not go very well, so he returned to England.

I suspect this land may have been in southern Quebec near the U.S. border, since the British government encouraged British people, especially former soldiers, to settle in this area to protect Canada from the U.S.

Census records all indicate that Mrs. Mary Middleton (nee Woodward) was born in Canada in about 1822 but lived most of her life in Hull, Yorkshire. Her parents were William and Mary Woodward. William's marriage record states that he was a member of the "Royal Artillery".

Mrs. Mary Middleton's burial was recorded at St. Andrews Drypool church, which was the official parish church of Drypool parish at this time.
The churchyard at St. Peters Drypool Church had became full and was closed for burials in 1855. Subsequent burials for Drypool parish were at the Drypool and Southcoates Cemetery, which operated from about 1848 to 1929. Please also see the page for

On 12 December 1878 a newer church, St. Andrews Drypool, was consecreted and it became the official parish church of Drypool parish. The church of St. Peters Drypool continued to operate as a chapel within Drypool parish. The church of St. Peters Drypool was completely destroyed by bombing in 1941. It is now a park, and a very small number of gravestones still exist and they are along a brick wall in the park.
