Son of Martha McCracken (b. Dec 27, 1779, d. Feb 12, 1854, PA) and John Nevin (b. Nov 21, 1776, d. Oct 19, 1829, Shippensburg, Cumberland, PA. John was a descendant of Daniel Nevin, who came to the Cumberland Valley from Ireland prior to 1770 and who was a Private in the Cumberland County Militia during the Revolutionary War). He attended school near Shippensburg, coming to Allegheny county when he was 16 years old, he spent three years here, then went to Michigan for two years, coming back to Pittsburgh and marrying Hannah Irwin on Jun 4, 1844. Father of three children. He helped form Nevin's Battery in the Civil War and its captain was his nephew John Irwin Nevin (son of his brother Daniel Nevin). His son, William Irvin Nevin died of camp fever in the Civil War. Theodore and his brother, Robert, owned T. H. Nevin & Co., a paint and varnish manufacturer and dealer specializing in ready mixed paints. Theodore was president of the First National Bank of Allegheny for many years, an elder in the Presbyterian Church, superintendent of the Sunday School and on the board of Western Theological Seminary.
