John married Martha McCracken, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Finley) McCracken. John and Martha had eight children, several of whom earned great praise and recognition, including Dr. John Williamson Nevin, a renowned clergyman and author.
John and Martha's grandson, Ethelbert Woodbridge Nevin, was one of the most popular composers of his day.
John died at the age of 52.
