John Nevin, the elder son of Daniel Nevin and Elizabeth Williamson Nevin, was born on Herron's Branch in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, near Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He spent his formative years on the family farm.

His father, Daniel, operated an inn, which at the time was the community's social center. In fact, tradition has it that President Washington visited at the inn upon his return from quelling the Whiskey Rebellion in Western Pennsylvania.

According to the biography of his grandson, John Nevin was "a graduate and trustee of Dickinson College and one of the earliest abolitionists in the country." John married Martha McCracken, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Finley) McCracken. John and Martha had eight children, several of whom earned great praise and recognition, including Dr. John Williamson Nevin, a renowned clergyman and author.

John and Martha's grandson, Ethelbert Woodbridge Nevin, was one of the most popular composers of his day.

John died at the age of 52.
