Mary was the second oldest daughter in a very large family so she had responsibility to help with the children and household chores. She once won an award for her crocheting and also for sword dancing. As a young girl she worked in a mill. She married Alexander Brown, a widower, on Oct. 26, 1908 in Blythswood, Glasgow. Not long after her husband died, she brought her four children, three sons and a daughter, to America, arriving in New York, New York on March 23, 1926 on the ship Caledonia. The family settled in West Virginia before moving to New York City in the 1930s. To her grandchildren, she was known as "Granny." Known for her quick wit, she loved a good joke. She was a very hard worker (running a boarding house and laundering the white shirts of coal miners in West Virginia) and said that it never hurt her any. She died just months short of her 100th birthday.
