Daughter of Fredrick & Catherine Thiner Buscher, Irene was baptized Irene Philomena. Irene changed her middle name unofficially later in life which is why her obituary lists her middle name as Veronica.

She was an avid reader of romance novels and the mother of 4 boys and 1 girl. She worked in a hat shop in Fort Dodge in her 20s. The family moved to Waterloo in the late 30s.
