Robert Lindsay "Eugene" Morehead was the youngest of eight children born to Governor John Motley Morehead (1796-1866) and his wife Ann Eliza Lindsay (1804-1868). He was born at Blandwood, his father's home in Greensboro, in 1845. He was named Robert Lindsay Morehead, but as a child was nicknamed "Lougie," and later adopted the name Eugene. There were a great many Robert Lindsays in the family, namesakes of Eugene's maternal grandfather Col. Robert Lindsay (1776-1818) and great grandfather, Judge Robert Lindsay (c.1735-1901), who were prominent men in this history of North Carolina.

Eugene attended the University of North Carolina, and was a Confederate soldier. On 7 January 1874, he married Miss Lucy Lathrop (1851-1918) of Savannah, Ga. She was a daughter of James W. Lathrop and his wife Margaret Warren. Eugene and Lucy settled in Durham, NC, and they had two children: Eliza L. "Lizzie" Morehead (1876-1938, Mrs. John F. Wily) and John Lathrop Morehead (1882-1953).

Many thanks to Find A Grave contributor Carter Powell # 48627179 for adding the wonderful obituary, and for letting me know that he died in Savannah, instead of Durham, as I had supposed.
