Note:The name Vliet appears among the ancient nobility of Holland, who had the ir surnames nearly all from a village, house or tract of land owned by them or their forefathers, and before each surname placed the little word, "van". The meaning of Vliet is stream or river, Van Vliet - of the stream of river.
Utrecht, the main town of the province of the same name and the fourth largest city in the Netherlands, is situated on the Kromme Oude Rijn and on the river Vecht which subsequently flows into the Ijsselmeer. The town's history is documented as declined after the principality of Utrecht was taken over by Emperor Charles V in 1528, but it subsequently regained influence during the Dutch struggle for liberation from Spanish rule.

South Holland is a province situated on the North Sea in the western part of the Netherlands. The provincial capital is The Hague and its largest city is Rotterdam. Our ancestors lived in Barendrecht. The name "Barendrecht" is derived from the Germanic word birni, translated as "mud" or "muddy", and the Latin word trāiectum translated as "to cross (a river)" to denote a muddy river crossing.[5][6]

The current municipality of Barendrecht is located in the area of three former fiefdoms: East-Barendrecht, West-Barendrecht, and Carnisse. The oldest reference to East-Barendrecht is from 1264. These fiefdoms were in Riederwaard, an area reclaimed from water since the 12th century but had to deal with frequent dike breaches throughout the 13th and 14th centuries. Further stages in land reclamation, constituting the major part of modern Barendrecht, were the Binnenland polder (1484), Buitenland polder (1555) and Zuidpolder (1649).

During the French Period, the three fiefdoms were merged into one municipality Barendrecht. After the French Period, it was split into East and West-Barendrecht, but in 1836 it was again united as one municipality.
