"Mr. Amos Allen, one of our oldest and best known citizens, died this morning, at his residence, 24 North Fourth street. Mr. Allen was 73 years of age. He came to this city in 1804, from Vermont. Troy was at that time only an insignificant village. He was early engaged here in the stage business, running the first passenger coach, it is believed, that ever left this city. During the war of 1812, he left Troy in the company enrolled here, taking part in the Canada expedition. Returning to Troy at the close of the war, he went into the old Centre Market, on State street,—the institution which occupied the site where the engine houses now stand, and which was succeeded by the Fulton Market many years after. Mr. Allen remained there for some time, and then returned to his old business of staging—running the line of coaches between this city and Schenectady, until they were succeeded by rails and the locomotive. All who traveled over the route will remember him. In that position, he made a name familiar to the traveling public throughout the country. During five years past, Mr. Allen has been a sufferer from paralysis, which finally terminated his life. He will be mourned by many. A man of strong and determined character, pure habits, elevated impules, and the strictest integrity, he made friends everywhere, and was respected by all who knew him. Thus, one after another, the landmarks of the past generation of our citizens are passing away."
